Dedicated to Margaret Atwood (obvs)
I wonder if that cat would like Margaret Atwood
Like Margaret Atwood likes the cat. Would
The cat write Margaret Atwood
In a series of cat poems
(Dedicated to cat-lovers,
Cat friends,
And cat others)?
Owing to the knowing
That cats write cat koans,
Would the poem about Margaret
Keep on growing and growing?
Would the cat at-
tack Margaret At-
wood when the cat at-
tained Buddhahood?
Or would that cat-
egorically be cat-
egorised as no good?
Would the cat caterwaul
Margaret’s name at the wall?
Or meow it in corridors
To the sound of cat calls?
Would the sound of her name
Echo down halls?
Or travel like the pealing of cat-
hedral bells falling?
Calling!
Calling all cats!
Take up your paws.
And put on your hats.
There’s a war to be won
In the name of the cats.
And Margaret Atwood
Gives her consent for that.
Because she’s the queen –
The queen of all cats.
And cats are attacked
By things which aren’t cats.
Don’t question that!
Just get out there
And shoot at
Anything which isn’t Margaret At-
wood
Or cat!
Cat! Cat! Cat!
O, but I can’t be bothered with that!
I’d rather lie here
And take a cat-nap,
And dream about Margaret
When she sits on my lap…
Or was it me that did that?
Anyway, what I’m really trying to say is….
That cat would like Margaret Atwood
Like Margaret Atwood likes the cat.
Good!
